The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The speculation around this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team is likely building a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in diverse methods, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
